Young Eyes Are Most Vulnerable to HEV

As Millennials gradually depend on their mobile devices, the generation that follows can suffer more.
With a standard optimal lens, both UV and HEV lights can reach your eye.
While ”blue blockers” block HEV lights, you would need a separate pair for outdoor light with stronger protection.
While transition (light-responsive) lenses are helpful, and have some resistance, they do not block HEV light from reaching your eyes.
Not only do Photochromic Blue Blockers block harmful HEV blue light, they also darken in the sunlight, and return clear inside. Everything you need in one pair!

FAQ

About Blue Light

Blue light, also known as HEV (High Energy Visible) light, is associated with regulating circadian rhythm, melatonin release, elevating mood and cognitive function. Although some exposure to the blue light spectrum is good, too much can be very harmful. It can cause poor sleep and it is also associated with increased risk of obesity, diabetes, heart disease and depression.

Where Does Blue Light Come From?

Blue light is found in every source of light, but is particularly concentrated in our everyday devices such as computer monitors, tablets, phones, and compact fluorescent lightbulbs. Blue light emitted by modern day devices penetrates to the back of the eye where the damage occurs. This is why the blue light-blocking eyeglasses market is becoming increasingly popular.

Light-Responsive + Photochromic Lens

Photochromic lenses are lenses that darken when exposed to ultraviolet (UV) light. These lenses have a special feature that protect your eyes from UV light by darkening. The glasses progressively darken over a few minutes when you are in the sun, this is why they are also referred to as progressive transition glasses. The time to darken varies by brand and several other factors such as the temperature, but they typically darken within 2-4 minutes, and block about 80% of the sunlight. The photochromic lenses also lighten to complete clarity when indoors within 3 to 5 minutes. They will variably darken when partially exposed to UV light – such as on a cloudy day. These glasses are perfect when you are going in and out of UV (sunlight) on a regular basis.

Photochromic blue blocking glasses work best with anti-reflective lens because 99.99% of the light (and UV) gets through to the lens. Only 86-93% of light gets through to the lens on non-anti-reflective lenses. In comparison, the windshield of a car blocks out nearly 100% of UV so the photochromic blue light blocking eyeglasses do not darken much when in a car.
Payne Glasses is the first eyeglasses company to offer this premier lens that is BOTH photochromic AND HEV blue light blocking!
